Inter House English Debate Competition

25th July 2020

‘’It is better to debate a question without settling it than to settle a question without debating” – Joseph Joubert. The debate is one of the academic activities that give students creative room to express what they feel. The length and breadth of knowledge that they gain through this is simply unparalleled. With this thought in mind, Shikhar commenced with the Inter-House Debate competition.

The Sanskaar Valley School has set the benchmark for conducting activities and competitions online successfully amid the challenging times of the pandemic. And in the same way, the Inter-House Debate competition was organized on the topic “Preservation of Culture and Suppression of Women are synonymous” by the student council under the guidance of the English Department on the 24th of July 2020 for grades IX, X, XI & XII. The debate was conducted online via Flipgrid during the competition time.

Each house had a four-member team. Each member was allowed to speak for 2.5 minutes. The first two speakers spoke in favour and against the motion respectively. The third speaker questioned the competing house as the interjector and the fourth speaker answered the questions of the interjector.

The teams were well prepared and exhibited great oratory skills including skills like overstatement, definition, rhetoric, irony, etc. to convince the audience and judges. The participants, armed with statistics and data validated and made their arguments more emphatic with their righteous facial expressions, voice modulation and gestures. The competition was an enthralling experience for the speakers as well as the audience.

The competition was judged by Ms. Swati Dubey and Ms. Akshita Singh from the Sopaan Block. Students were judged on the parameters of presentation, content, relevance, oratory skills, question and answering the rebuttal.
